Snail Mail For Beginners
I began my snailmail journey about 5 years ago, and just as you may be feeling right now, I had no clue what I was doing.
What should I say? What if my letters are boring? What if it takes me forever to respond? I’m not artistic enough to send something beautiful!
These were the types of doubt that kept me stalking instagram accounts, but not jumping in myself. Then, one day I did, and I have never looked back!
So, if you are feeling self conscious about starting a pen-friendship, here are some tips to get going.
Don’t worry about writing the next Great American Novel, just write what you want, and your penpal will enjoy it. Don’t worry about perfect grammar or spelling, this is just a conversation between friends, it’s not being graded.
The snail mail community is patient. Your penpal will always enjoy receiving your response, even if it’s been a while.
For me, decorating the envelope and creating things to include in my letters is my form of artistic expression, but it doesn’t have to be for you. I have absolutely loved every letter I have ever received, and if it’s also a piece of art that’s just an added bonus. But, remember, letter writing is about the letter, not the envelope or goodies.
There will be pen-friendships that fizzle. That’s ok.
Make the address clear and legible. Your postal workers will thank you.
Postage Basics
A domestic (U.S.) letter costs 73¢
A domestic (U.S.) postcard costs 56¢
Additional ounce costs 28¢
Square, oversized, or unusual envelopes under 1oz add 46¢ to the standard postal rate
International letters and postcards cost $1.65 (or more depending on shape and weight)
A “Forever Stamp” will always be equal to the value of the current postage rate. For example, if you bought the Forever Stamp for 60¢, but postage rates increase to 70¢ for a letter, the Forever stamp will be worth 70¢.
Postage does not expire. You can use any vintage/old postage that has not been canceled to send mail. The total value on the envelope must equal the current postage rate.
